Last week’s military coup in Guinea saw President Alpha Condé arrested and detained. Colonel Mamady Doumbouya emerged as the face of the new military leaders. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres slammed the taking of power at gunpoint. Neighbouring states followed his lead, adding their condemnation. Then followed the west African economic group Ecowas and the African Union.
Colonel Doumbouya announced there would be a government of national unity and a swift transition to democratic governance. Over a week later starts the process towards that aim.
