What Mexico’s new President Claudia Sheinbaum said about Trump after warning that migrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country’

  • Mexico’s first female president says she will have ‘good’ relationship with Trump
  • His historic rise to the presidency comes as immigration is a major issue
  • Sheinbaum won a landslide victory and plans to continue AMLO’s left-wing legacy

Mexico’s new president Claudia Sheinbaum has said she believes her relationship “will be good” with whoever wins the 2024 US election, whether it is Donald Trump or Joe Biden.

This is despite former President Trump declaring last year for the second time that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.”

Sheinbaum, who is Jewish, will become Mexico’s first female president after the head of the National Electoral Institute said she had between 58.3 percent and 60.7 percent of the vote, the Associated Press reported .

Sheinbaum will succeed his mentor, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a populist who expanded social programs but largely failed to reduce cartel violence in Mexico.

Sheinbaum, the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City, made her comments about Trump last month on Bloomberg TV.

Sheinbaum told Bloomberg TV that, like outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, she would have a “good relationship” with former President Donald Trump if he were returned to the White House next January.

“Yes, I think it will be good whether President Biden or President Trump wins,” Sheinbaum said in Spanish.

“We have very strong economic integration with the United States. We are now the main trading partner, and this requires us to maintain good relations.

After Canada, Mexico is a huge trading partner with the United States, purchasing $324.3 billion worth of U.S. exported goods in 2022, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

The free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada took effect on July 1, 2020 and was inaugurated by Trump, Obrador and Justin Trudeau in 2018.

“President López Obrador ultimately had a good relationship with Trump and I don’t see why we couldn’t have that too,” Sheinbaum recently told the BBC.

During his speech in Waterloo, Iowa, Trump said immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and denied any comparisons to Adolf Hitler.

At the same time, the then favorite added that she would not tolerate “discriminatory speech” against Mexicans abroad.

“Now I think obviously we’re always going to stand up for Mexicans abroad. We’re not in favor of any discriminatory speech, but there will be good relations.

Sheinbaum’s election to a six-year term comes as immigration appears to be one of the top issues in the US presidential election, with Trump regularly attacking Biden’s border policies.

Biden is responding by preparing to issue an immigration-related executive order this week, although he has previously said he needs congressional approval to stem the record flow of illegal crossings into the United States.

Encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border are down significantly from December’s records, but they still remain high compared to before Biden took office in 2021, according to Customs and Border Patrol.
