What is Will Smith’s “Matrix” teaser about?

Will Smith took to social media today and made everyone believe he would be starring in the next Matrix film in development at Warner Bros.

“In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith refused. He chose Wild Wild West, feeling it suited him better at the time. But the question remains: what would The Matrix have looked like with Will Smith as Neo?

But sources say Smith is not committed to the new Matrix movie. The whole teaser ties into a new music project that Smith has in the works. The last album he released was 2005’s “Lost and Found”, which contained the hit single “Switch”, which peaked at number seven on the chart. Billboard Hot 100, becoming Smith’s third and final top 10 hit on the Hot 100. Last June, Smith released his first single in nearly two decades, the hip hop gospel track “You Can Make It” featuring singer Fridayy and the Sunday Service Choir.

Wild Wild West bombed in the summer of 1999 at a production cost of $170 million and grossed $222 million worldwide. Smith co-starred with Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek. Warner Bros, the same studio behind The Matrix, was behind Wild Wild West. The matrixstarring Keanu Reeves in the lead role, grossed $467.8 million and spawned three other films, with the franchise grossing $1.79 billion to date.

A new Matrix Oscar nominated film The Martian The writing from screenwriter Drew Goddard is in the works at Warners with the franchise’s original co-writer and co-director Lana Wachowski executive producing. No casting attachments at this time. Goddard will produce with his partner Sarah Esberg (Moonlight, if Beale Street could talk) via their Goddard Textiles banner.
