Rose Okumura is a voice actor and content creator. Now she uses her skills to turn on annoying phone scammers.
It’s called scam baiting, which the Collins English Dictionary defines as the “practice of pretending to fall for fraudulent schemes online or over the phone in order to waste the authors’ time.”
“My mom actually got a pop-up scam on her computer where it said, you know, you have a virus, call this number,” Okumura recalled. “And then, for the low, low, unbelievable special rate of $499, you get a lifetime subscription to the service and none of it was real.”
So Okumura alerted his mother’s bank to stop the charge and called the scammer back.
“I decided to keep the scammer out as long as possible so he didn’t have time to call anyone else,” she explained.
Since then, Okumura has become a full-fledged internet vigilante. She says she is proud to be part of the growing community of online scammers and will continue to waste the time and resources of scammers as much as she can.
“It feels good at the end of the day to bring that kind of awareness, happiness and comedy to different people,” Okumura said.
