The defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, is known to move away from the traditional dark outfit in Washington, DC, playing the costume game by his own rules. But he also has a second kind of unconventional look – the relaxed operator.
It is a different atmosphere of the obviously lively blue costume that he wore during the recent summit of NATO, arousing criticism, but he shares some similarities with some of his other favorite flairs, such as flag links in his combinations, patriotic socks and a star of starry pocket.
The style gained momentum during the world war against terrorism, or Gwot, although previous versions date back to the 1990s. American special operators deployed in areas far from the support forces are sometimes necessary to blend. Light non -military clothes that can transmit professionalism while offering tactical characteristics that allow the carrier to maneuver during a shooting that has been useful.
And it has since been given to this look.

Hegseth put on this kind of outfit during recent trips to Guantánamo Bay in Cuba and the American-mexic border. He bore the same style while addressing journalists in Hawaii this week because he challenged that he and other Trump administration officials discussed sensitive attack plans on an unsecured messaging application.

The travel look differs from previous defense secretaries. Hegseth cultivated an image of “lethality” and having “dust on his boots”, characterized as a “agent of change” with a real combat experience in the field. This aims to contrast with his predecessors, many of whom had not only a combat experience but much more leadership experience.
He may have taken note of the comfortable style “occasional operator” while serving in the National Guard of the Army, although it is not clear. The office of the Secretary of Defense did not respond to the request for comments from Business Insider on the secretary’s outfit.
The general atmosphere associated with this gaze is that someone, often soldiers or first stakeholders, could “travel at one minute, then be on the next minute range, then be back in the professional office in the third case,” said Tim Jensen, co -founder of the growing style of the clothing brand, in an interview with Bi. The term “groan” is used to describe infantry staff.
What is the operator relaxed?
The look generally includes five components, said Jensen. Normally, a baseball style hat, perhaps with a sifted American flag, sunglasses, a collar shirt or a tee with a patriotic symbol, technical fabric pants (good in case you need to enter a sprint, explained Jensen) and hiking-style boots.
The first versions of this occasional look of the operator can be seen in photos of the 1990s, as when the Elite US Delta Force staff was photographed while traveling with the operation Desert Storm Leader, the American army general Norman Schwarzkopf, carrying rifles with buttoned shirts.
Before the Gwot, words coded by special operations as “operator” were not really part of the American general lexicon, observed Jensen. But after two decades of war and countless films, books and television programs representing SOF niche cultures, these preferences have infiltrated other parts of American life, including in the conventional corners of the American army.
Hegseth was not a special operator, but he is known to work with the green army of berets and Navy Seals.
In addition to the increase in the cultural popularity of special operations forces, while troops have returned from deployments in search of more functional clothing to bring home or to face future rotations abroad, many have been attracted to new clothing styles, said Michael Standing, a marketing coordinator for the Zero Foxtrot Popular Clothing brand.
The demand for an outdoor style, with abundant pockets and a loose adjustment to help obscure pistols for hidden transport, presented themselves as units of special American operations have also written lucrative contracts with marks like Patagonia, Salomon and Arc’teryx.

A different look
Hegseth’s travel look is a significant gap by some of the most recent secretaries. Jim Mattis, Trump’s first defense secretary, has rarely been seen in something other than dark formal costumes. Leon Panetta dressed in kakis and dressed shirts while Ash Carter wore dressed shirts and Several cases for devices. And Chuck Hagel favored a country club atmosphere and grandfather sweaters.

A predecessor, however, the veteran of the Gulf War Mark Esper, was photographed in an occasional operator style several times while visited Iraq and Afghanistan during his time as secretary of the American army.
While the look of the operator on leave has increased in popularity with veterans and first stakeholders in the past two decades, a large part of Hegseth’s look can probably be repressed by generational differences between him and his predecessors, said Derek Guy, an expert in male mode and author of the Die, Workwear blog.
While tailor -made clothes for men have decreased in popularity while technical fabrics become more omnipresent, a collar and necklace shirt and adjacent to khaki pants can transmit a modern professional image, Guy told Bi. A polo shirt could also be enough for such official trips, although it can communicate a less robust image, he said.
Hegseth is no stranger to tailor -made clothes, although its well -adjusted combinations and bright colors also distinguish it from other secretaries. But when visiting the troops, especially in hot climates, it might be logical that it gravity towards a younger look, said Guy.
“If you are a guy aged 60 or 70 and go out to visit the troops, you could always wear a tailor-made jacket because it is so rooted in your behavior,” he said. “I think that generational, these different types of men in different age groups have different ideas about what it means to look presentable.”
