What is in the new NHL CBA? Dig into the understanding of understanding

The NHL will introduce a salary ceiling for the playoffs as part of the extension of the collective negotiation agreement which he signed with the NHL players association on Friday, said league sources Athletics.

The extension of four years, which must still be ratified by separate votes by the owners and the players and did not be in force until the 2026-2027 season, calls for the creation of two rules to limit the use of the long-term exception of wage ceiling in cases where an injured player returns for the eliminations.

The first will pay limits to the additional ceiling space that a team will receive when a player will go on Ltir during the regular season. The teams will not be authorized to exceed the ceiling by an amount equal to the average salary of the previous season – unless the NHL and the NHLPA approve of the total amount, which will only occur when he makes no doubt that the player will miss the rest of the season, including the playoffs.

The second will see a cap introduced during the playoffs which will only apply to 20 players who are accompanied for each match. The teams will be able to mix their lists between the matches.

In the event that the ceiling of the playoffs has involuntary consequences, the NHL and the NHLPA have the right to reopen the agreement on this issue.

Here are some of the other key points included in the CBA extensionbased on a summary of the memorandum of understanding obtained by Athletics.

How the 84 game calendar works

The NHL regular season will have gone from 82 to 84 games from the 2026-27 season.

To accommodate this increase, the training camp will be shortened from 21 days to 13 – 18 for recruits – with a day off during the first week. Each team will be limited to four exhibition games, and players with 100 NHL or more games (including matches dressed for goalkeepers) will be capped in two exhibition matches.

The current idea is to start the regular season at the end of September and to have the Stanley Cup allocated by June 21, according to league sources. The two additional games added in the regular season will be division matches.

Minimum wage increase

The NHL minimum wage will jump each season from the new agreement from its current level of $ 775,000. The new minimums will be as follows:

  • 2026-27: $ 850,000
  • 2027-28: $ 900,000
  • 2028-29: $ 950,000
  • 2029-30: $ 1 million

Wage retention limits

Salaries retention will always be authorized in the trades, but with an interesting adjustment: a second retention on the same contract can only occur 75 days of the regular season after the first, which continues to use a third -time broker in real time, as has been seen in many cases during recent commercial deadlines.

Skinch

The players in play players should make a significant leap in its current level of 24 million dollars during the next CBA, the league paying all of the amounts outside the share (that is to say that it will not be released from shared revenues related to hockey).

The fund will develop as follows:

  • 2026-27: $ 34 million
  • 2027-28: $ 36 million
  • 2028-29: $ 38 million
  • 2029-30: $ 40 million

More clothing codes

The teams will no longer be authorized to implement a dress code for players. Instead, there will be a clothing code on a league level only requiring that players dress in a manner compatible with “contemporary fashion standards”.

Protection against the neck

The protection of the neck will become compulsory for all players entering the League from the 2026-20 season, with a minimum level of protection of A5.

Players with at least one NHL match will be accessible to rights and will not be subject to the rule.

Ebugs

The teams will be allowed to use a permanent emergency rescue goalkeeper who will travel with the club.

Shorter maximum contracts

The maximum duration of contracts will be reduced by one year, with a contract capped at seven years if a player is reached with his existing club before reaching the free agency and six years if he signs with a new club.

Olympic participation

The existing agreement allowing players to participate in the Olympic Games will be extended to cover the 2030 games in the French Alps.

Resolution of medical disputes

When a player is looking for a second medical opinion and the second doctor and team doctor do not agree on diagnosis and / or treatment, the two doctors will now select a third doctor to help resolve the dispute.

The team must duly take into account the opinion of the third expert before determining the final process of treatment and must also pay the reasonable costs of the third doctor.

Retirement Players Emergency Health Care

NHL and NHLPA will establish a retired health and well-being health fund, also dividing the annual cost of $ 4 million.

Alcohol bake

Players will no longer be prohibited from approaching wine and minds.

More fitness tests

Fitness tests will no longer be authorized during the training camp or the regular season.

Adjust the weeks goodbye

A small change in the NHL’s weeks of NHL’s leave: players exempt from renunciation that have played in at least 15 of the last 20 games of their team before the start of a week in leave will be entitled to NHL wages and services as long as they are not ready for minors before the fourth game of the team before his break.

Make a reduction in front loading contracts

The variability rules for front loading contracts will change as follows: increases from year to year will be limited to 20% of the first year, compared to 25%. And the lowest year of the contract must be at least 71% of the highest year, compared to 60% before.

For example, if the remuneration of the highest year is $ 10 million, the remuneration of the lowest year cannot be less than $ 7.1 million. And differences from year to year cannot exceed $ 2 million.

More “paper loans” Ahl

The NHL eliminates the “paper loans”, which occurred when the players were assigned to the AHL on paper only and never had to appear at the Club des Leagues Minor.

This practice reduced players’ remuneration because they were paid at the AHL rate for the days they were ready.

The CBA extension requires a loaned player to play in a minor league match before being recalled.

Standard retention rights

There will be standardized retention periods for players written according to their age who no longer explain if they are selected from CHL, Europe or NCAA.

For people selected at 18, the teams will keep their rights until June 1 after their writing. For players written at the age of 19 or more, the teams will keep their rights until June 1 on June 1 after their writing.

The only exception to these rules is for NCAA players at the time of expiration. Their rights will be extended up to 30 days after informing the NHL that they no longer play university hockey.

Contracts for European players

In the current ABC, European players aged 25 to 27 are required to sign entry -level contracts. This will no longer be the case under new rules. European players of this age will now be treated in the same way as all other players.

More reports

As indicated above, payments deferred in contracts will no longer be authorized.

For example, the payment of delayed bonus of $ 2 million in John Tavare’s new contract with Toronto Maple Leafs would no longer be authorized from 2026-2027. But Tavares is good, because its agreement has been signed under existing rules. Ditto for the other players who have already signed delayed payment contracts, such as the Frank Vatrano of the Anaheim Ducks, the Jake McCabe des Maple Leafs and the Seth Jarvis and Jaccob of Carolina Hurricanes.

The owners pay for taxes on the composition and pay of workers

Among the victories for the players are the fact that the owners will now cover payments entirely for the compensation of accidents at work and taxes on employers’ payroll. Under the proposed ABC, the annual cost of $ 70 million will be completely deleted from players’ income and will become the responsibility of the owners.
