What Dak Prescott says about the Cowboys as free agency payday approaches

Dak Prescott says he’s not interested in the tons of money he stands to make as a pending free agent in 2025 or who is the beneficiary of a mega extension with the Cowboys.

“I don’t play for money,” Prescott said via Patrik Walker on the Cowboys’ official team website. “I never cared about it, to be honest with you. Yeah, I’d give it up just to play this game.

“I leave it to the business people to say what it’s worth, what they’re supposed to give a quarterback of my game. It’s about controlling what I can control. Handle this part and everything else will take care of itself.

He has a cap hit of $55.4 million this year and will be a free agent after this season. According to a provision in his 2020 contract, he cannot be franchise-tagged next offseason.

With the Cowboys lacking the leverage to keep Prescott in Dallas, owner Jerry Jones will have to open his checkbook in record fashion or risk losing his star player.

Prescott’s agent, Todd France, reportedly has “insane leverage,” an NFL agent told Heavy.

After seeing Lions quarterback Jared Goff land a massive four-year, $212 million contract with $170 million guaranteed, France and Prescott may be in a pretty good spot.

Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa are all quarterbacks who will likely receive extensions before next offseason, allowing Prescott to try to outplay them.

Prescott has the added potential benefit of being the rare top quarterback to reach free agency, joining Kirk Cousins, who received four years and $180 million from the Falcons.

The current record annual salary is Joe Burrow’s $55 million per season, a figure Prescott plans to surpass unless he truly doesn’t care about his salary, as he claims.

Prescott has already said he’s willing to test free agency, if it gets that far.

“I love this game, I love playing and I love getting better as a player and my teammates around me,” Prescott said in April. “Right now it’s with the Dallas Cowboys. This is where I want to be, and this is where I am, and this is my goal. After this season, we’ll see where we are, and if the future holds it, then (great). Otherwise, we’ll go from there.
