The Patriots will have a new head coach next season, but it remains to be seen what will happen with the rest of New England’s staff.
Robert Kraft and company acted fast after their season finale when they promptly fired Jerod Mayo. There were no other seismic changes at that juncture, however, as Kraft expressed a mild commitment to the front office and didn’t offer any insight on the statuses of assistant coaches.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared some intel on the latter in a column published Sunday morning.
“Patriots assistant coaches were told Wednesday that they were on vacation and would receive an update when a head coach was hired, according to a source familiar with the situation,” Reiss wrote. “A new head coach could potentially keep some members of the staff who remain under contract, which leaves many in a holding pattern.”
As for New England’s most noteworthy assistants, it’s tough to imagine either Alex Van Pelt or DeMarcus Covington will return in their respective coordinator roles. Covington reportedly already interviewed with another team, while there has been significant chatter about who potentially could replace Van Pelt.

And there probably should be a mass of coaching changes, as the Patriots didn’t do much of anything well in the 2024 season.
