The Israeli army struck the city of southern Khan Younis on Tuesday evening in an attempt to kill Muhammad Sinwar, one of the best leaders in Hamas in the enclave, according to Israeli military officials.
There was no immediate confirmation that Israel succeeded.
Throughout the war in Gaza, Israel sought to eliminate Hamas hierarchy, methodically murdering the high officials of the group. After such murders, the Israeli army has often taken weeks to confirm the death of a target, while Hamas has sometimes taken months.
Here is what we know about Mr. Sinwar, who has already survived such assassination attempts.
He is Yahya Sinwar’s younger brother.
Muhammad Sinwar was born in Khan Younis in 1975. He was Yahya Sinwar’s younger brother, who organized the attacks led by Hamas against Israel who sparked the war in Gaza in October 2023 and in the footsteps of which Muhammad Sinwar followed much of his life.
Their family fled Ashkelon, Israel, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war in a refugee camp in Khan Younis.
The young Sinwar would have joined Hamas in the early 1990s while Yahya increased the ranks of the organization. In 1991, he was arrested by the Israeli army for an alleged terrorist activity, spending less than a year in police custody. He was also imprisoned for several years in the 1990s in the city of Ramallah of the West Bank by the Palestinian Authority.
He is known as “shadow”.
Like his older brother, Muhammad Sinwar has long been wanted by the Israeli authorities. He would have been targeted in six assassination attempts by 2021.
