Western leaders call for de-escalation following reports of Israeli strike on Iran – POLITICO

“The G7 is committed to ensuring Israel’s security and achieving de-escalation,” Blinken added.

The New York Times, Washington Post and other media outlets cited Israeli officials confirming that the strike was carried out by the Israeli military. Iran fired air defense batteries on Friday morning after reports of explosions near a major air base in the city of Isfahan, the official IRNA news agency reported.

After Tehran bombarded Israel last Saturday night with around 300 missiles and drones, most of which were repelled by Israel and its allies, governments around the world held their breath to see if Israel would retaliate.

This bombing followed Israel’s bombing of an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, in early April.

Iran downplayed Friday’s attack and said it had no plans to retaliate again.

“This is an evolving situation; it would not be right for me to speculate until the facts become clearer,” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said. “We are working to confirm details with our allies,” he continued.
