Ange Postecoglou won’t get carried away just yet, but Tottenham Hotspur are in a strong position in their bid to secure a return to the Champions League.
Fifth place will likely be enough to secure a spot in Europe’s major tournament next season. A 2-1 win over Luton Town on Saturday, coupled with Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Brentford, means Spurs have an eight-point buffer with nine matches remaining.
To secure its place in the competition, Tottenham will aim for fourth place. They are three points behind Aston Villa as things stand, but Postecoglou’s side have a game in hand.
Spurs have some tricky matches on the horizon, notably against three title contenders, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
But given their inconsistency, it’s hard to imagine Manchester United embarking on the kind of winning run that could put Tottenham under pressure. If five teams are going to qualify for the Champions League, we certainly already know who they are.
However, this is not the message that Postecoglou will transmit to his players. Things can change quickly at this point in the season. It is possible, although unlikely, that United will be just two points behind Tottenham by the end of the weekend.
Erik ten Hag’s side don’t play until Thursday, so a win over West Ham United would see Spurs move 11 points clear of the team directly below them in the table.
Tottenham have not triumphed on this ground since November 2019, while the Hammers have won three of the last six meetings (there have been two Spurs victories and one draw).
So Tottenham are unlikely to have it all their way, but they will be quietly confident of walking out of the London Stadium with all three points.

There is a certain irony in the fact that many West Ham United supporters are fed up with David Moyes’ tactical conservatism during a season in which they have one of the worst defensive records in the division.
After a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend, only four teams have conceded more goals than West Ham in 2023/24.
Moyes’ side blew a 3-1 lead at St James’ Park, dealing a major blow to their chances of qualifying for the Europa League.

West Ham are seventh at the time of writing and that should be enough to return to the European secondary tournament, but things are tight in this part of the table.
Tottenham could benefit from their rivals’ defensive woes on Tuesday. West Ham are struggling to find the right balance between defense and attack, and that could prove costly against a skilful Spurs side.

On the positive side for West Ham, their attack has really been intense lately. The front four of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio is one of the best the Premier League has to offer.
West Ham have scored 13 goals in their last five games. Paqueta has been excellent since returning from injury, while only four players have found the back of the net more often than Bowen.
Given his team’s weakness in defense, Moyes may decide that attack is the best form of defense on Tuesday.
Tottenham will meet fire with fire if that is the case. The Spurs have struggled at times to overcome opponents on the back foot, but they tend to thrive against opponents willing to step up the field.
This is shaping up to be an entertaining encounter at the London Stadium.

Once again, Son Heung-min took over for Tottenham this weekend. He scored the winner to help Postecoglou’s side move past Luton.
The South Korea international had a busy international break, scoring for South Korea against Thailand in Seoul and Bangkok.
But there were no signs of fatigue this weekend, with Son earning his team two extra points late in the match.
It was his 15th goal of the season – the Tottenham talisman is tied with the aforementioned Bowen in the Premier League rankings.
Son has scored against West Ham in each of the last four full seasons. He didn’t find the target in a 2-1 defeat in December, but we’re thinking about his chances of scoring in the reverse fixture.
