While she made history as the youngest solo artist to score a No. 1 hit with “Leave (Get Out)” in 2004, JoJo’s career ended when her label refused to release her her new music as she began to pursue acting. This led to a years-long battle as the 18-year-old fought in court to be released from her contract. His case with Blackground was ultimately settled in 2013, although Jojo later told UpRoxx: “I didn’t get any money. I didn’t get any compensation or anything like that. I’m just left being able to sign another record deal I was like, ‘Let’s do it!’ I was free.”
She went on to re-record her first two Blackground-owned albums and singles, launch her own label through a partnership with Warner Records, and release her critically acclaimed album, Good to know.
In 2021, she announced her engagement to the actor Dexter Darden.
