A note from Joker Rachel Martin host: I usually have to finish a conversation with a guest before I can draw a big conclusion, but I will go out on a member and say this about “Weird Al” Yankovic: I think that more than the perfect rhyme scheme, more than the most ridiculous pun, more than music itself, which “Weird Al” loves the most in the world is to make people happy.
Hey, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he fell hard for the accordion when he was a child and achieved a few years later that he was really good to invent false words of real songs. And that – it was his ticket for glory and fame.
But I don’t think. His art is too deleted to be on the ego. During the performance, “Weird Al” is the spiritual manifestation of each silly child who never integrates, now finally his moment – not by trying to integrate into the idea of someone else’s cool – but leaning in everything that makes them bizarre. And it’s a beautiful and generous thing.
And 46 years after his first great success, “My Bologna” was released, “Weird Al” is still in it. His tour “Bigger & Weinger 2025” starts in June.
