‘We were a little lucky’ – France boss Didier Deschamps hails ‘superb’ England after knocking out the Three Lions from the World Cup, but Adrien Rabiot says Harry Kane’s late miss was ‘ justice”

Didier Deschamps has admitted France were “lucky” to beat “superb” England to stage a World Cup semi-final against Morocco.

The defending champions beat the Three Lions 2-1 as Gareth Southgate’s side again suffered heartache.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud scored either side of Harry Kane’s equalizer in what was another dramatic World Cup knockout clash.

Having already scored once from the penalty spot, Kane was given a second chance in the 85th minute after Mason Mount was knocked down by Theo Hernandez – a decision Adrien Rabiot criticized.

But he failed to beat Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris for the second time as he launched his effort 12 yards over the bar.

After the win, Les Bleus boss Deschamps praised the performance of both nations, as he said: “It’s fabulous, it was a big game.

“We played against a superb England team who are technically and physically strong.

“It’s great for the players to be in the last four again. In those moments you would like time to stand still for a while.

“But tonight, we’re going to take advantage of it. We were a bit lucky even though we gave two penalties.

“We kept our lead with our hearts and our guts.”

He added: “England have a very good team and what they showed in terms of technical ability, intensity, even though we fought well, was impressive.

“I regret that we gave them a penalty and then another one, which was missed, but I also thank my team. We did some good things.

Rabiot thinks it was ‘fair’ that Kane missed his late penalty[/caption]

“We were dangerous and we have great quality. We also have impressive mental strength. We also have experience, but England too.

“They have young players, but they are young players playing in some of the best teams in Europe.

“It comes down to details and thankfully it has gone our way. Sometimes it takes a little luck.

Juventus midfielder Rabiot said it was “right” that Kane missed his late spot kick after being outraged Hernandez had been penalised.

He remarked: “First of all, I’m not sure it’s really a foul. We have seen hundreds of actions like this that are not given.

“Of course, when he missed, we were happy, it was fair because there was no penalty.”
