National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN’s “The Lead” on Thursday that the Biden administration badly needs the money to fight the new BA.2 variant of COVID, which he said could cause a surge in cases earlier in the week.
Anchor Jake Tapper said, “Congress just walked out of town without approving new funding for the COVID response. It is a democratically controlled Congress. Are you worried about running into issues with testing and recall supplies? »
Fauci said, “Oh definitely, Jake. We really need the money. It’s not just about saying we need it. Over a period of time between now and the next few months, things will wear thin. What will run out is that testing will run out, antibodies will run out, antivirals will run out. The studies we’re doing to determine the best approach to the next level of reinforcement, we don’t have the money for. So these are things that we really need to take seriously. I hope Congress, which so far has been very generous in supporting what we need and supporting it well. But now is not the time to stop that. We really need to get the money that was requested. I hope it will pass.”
