Watch the first ever trailer for the 1990 Yankees

The 1990 New York Yankees are still making headlines.

Page Six exclusively reveals the first trailer for Peacock’s new original documentary series, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos and Baseball,” which chronicles the infamous antics of the MLB team – on and off the field – more than three decades after their turbulent season.

“There’s a Yankees story you’re used to hearing. The iconic Hall of Famers, the 27 championships, the dynasty,” a voiceover teases at the start of the clip. “Well it is not this story of the Yankees. This is the one they don’t want you to hear.

The trailer then flashes back to 1990, when the Yankees were, according to New York Post sports columnist Joel Sherman, “both a laughingstock and a horror show, something difficult to watch and impossible to look away.”

The new Peacock project draws inspiration from the longtime baseball writer’s in-depth “Bronx Zoo” series for The Post. Sherman recalled that the 1990 season was “crazy” for the famous MLB team, telling the cameras: “It really was the Bronx Zoo. »

“The 1990 Yankees were terrible. No, terrible doesn’t sum it up,” Sherman wrote in 2020. “A worse team emerges every year in every sport. It was a disaster. A humiliation. A fiasco.

“Bronx Zoo ’90” takes a closer look at the 1990 Yankees team, recalling everything from their season of mistakes (culminating in a tumultuous record of 67 wins and 95 losses) to the arrival of illegally purchased cougars at the clubhouse at Yankee Stadium, former owner George Steinbrenner’s obsession with destroying Dave Winfield, the drama involving MLB/NFL star Deion Sanders’ ‘yo-yo’ing’ career decisions and much more.

“I tried to forget about that team,” former Yankees manager Buck Showalter admits in part, in a solo confessional teased in the trailer.

The sports docuseries also provides a rare glimpse into former Yankees outfielder Mel Hall’s high-profile romance with then-high school senior Chastity Easterly. At the time, Easterly was just 15 years old when she struck up a relationship with the athlete.

Despite all the controversy and the feeling that the team had hit “rock bottom,” the documentary series also highlights how the 1990 Yankees “laid the foundation for one of the greatest dynasties” in sports history.

As “Good Day New York” host Rosanna Scotto famously said, “New Yorkers don’t like to lose.”

“Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos and Baseball,” produced by Believe Entertainment Group, New York Post Entertainment and Whitecap Entertainment, premieres Thursday, May 16, exclusively on Peacock. Other notable sports figures with cameos include former Yankees players Don Mattingly, Steve Sax, Dave LaPoint and Kevin Maas, as well as general manager Brian Cashman and announcer Michael Kay.
