Paul Skenes’ MLB career may have gotten off to a flying start, but the rookie had a nightmarish first inning when Pittsburgh took on Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon.
Rays slugger Yandy Díaz homered on Skenes’ first pitch, helping the team to a 3–1 victory at PNC Park.
The stadium went wild when Díaz pushed Skenes’ first-pitch fastball at nearly 100 mph off the right-field foul pole.
It’s a rare stroke of bad luck for the 22-year-old who is having a very impressive start to his career.
Since being called up to the majors last month, Skenes has gone at least six innings in all but two of his seven starts.

He also has 53 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings and has only allowed 10 runs to date.
The No. 1 overall prospect has also made headlines amid his ongoing romance with gymnast Livvy Dunne.
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model recently admitted that she’s more nervous for her beau than at her own events.
“I get more nervous watching Paul because it’s just different when you’re not doing it and you’re not in control,” Dunne said in a video posted by Bleacher Report.

Skenes’ girlfriend Dunne has been a frequent presence at his matches over the past two months
The two began dating while studying together at LSU and made their romance public in 2023.
“But I have confidence in his abilities and I’m sort of channeling those nerves into excitement for him,” she continued.
The blonde beauty laughed when asked if Skenes was also more nervous for her than before her own matches.
“Honestly, I don’t know anyone who thinks like him. I really don’t know what he would say,” she replied.
The couple began dating while attending LSU in Baton Rouge and confirmed their romance on social media in 2023.
Dunne has been a frequent presence at Pirates games since Skenes was called up to the big leagues last month, most recently showing her support when they faced the All-Star Dodgers, managed by Shohei Ohtani.
