Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks at the Stanford Business, Government and Society Forum on Wednesday. He will deliver prepared remarks followed by a question-and-answer session with a moderator.

The appearance follows last month’s Fed meeting in which it held interest rates steady and Powell indicated the central bank would likely cut interest rates later this year. But he also said the timing was uncertain and policymakers needed more evidence that inflation was heading toward the Fed’s 2% target.

Other officials have since echoed those comments. They plan an unspecified number of rate cuts, but the timing is uncertain. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said Wednesday he thinks there may be only one reduction this year, although his colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee have indicated three. .

Markets expect the Fed to embark on an easing path in June or July, with a total of three cuts by the end of 2024.
