Was inspired by a leaked abortion plan

Nicholas Roske, the would-be assassin who targeted Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022, told law enforcement he was inspired by the leak of a draft opinion in the case that was canceled. Roe v. Wade.

Police arrested Roske in June 2022, after the defendant allegedly traveled to Maryland from California to assassinate Kavanaugh. The Biden administration continued to allow protests outside Kavanaugh’s house, against existing federal law.

Roske has been waiting for trial for three years. His lawyers asked federal investigators Friday to suppress evidence of his confession, saying he was not advised of his rights at the time.

THE Washington Post reported Friday (emphasis added):

Nicholas Roske, who authorities said was concerned about the court’s rightward shift, is expected to go on trial in June on charges of attempted murder of a Supreme Court justice. His lawyers don’t want jurors to hear statements in which authorities say Roske told investigators he flew across the country in 2022 with the intention of breaking into Kavanaugh’s home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, to kill the judge, then commit suicide.

Roske then told investigators he was upset by the leak of the draft Supreme Court opinion, according to an FBI affidavit. Kavanaugh supported the opinion, which indicated that the court would overturn Roe v. Wade. Roske added that a recent mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, made him concerned that Kavanaugh would “rally behind 2nd Amendment rulings that would loosen gun control laws,” the affidavit said.

The opinion disclosed in the case of Dobbs v.Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) indicated that the Court intended to overturn Roe deer and his extraordinary conclusion that the right to abortion was implicit in the Constitution.

THE Dobbs This decision would return authority over abortion policy to the states and explicitly noted that its opinion applied only to the issue of abortion, not other social issues (although Justice Clarence Thomas disagrees).

The leak caused an uproar and inspired left-wing protests — and, obviously, the attempted assassination of Kavanaugh.

The Supreme Court affirmed that it had not been able to identify the fugitive, despite an investigation which lasted several months.
