Shakira fans who managed to go to Metlife Stadium are warned that measles was also in the house last week.
“The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) alerts residents about potential exhibitions associated with a newly identified case of measles in a non-NJ resident who attended a New Jersey concert,” officials said on Tuesday.
The warning was issued for those who attended the Shakira concert on Thursday evening until Friday morning.
Health officials said potentially exposed individuals “could develop symptoms until June 6.” These could include a strong fever, a cough, a flowing nose, aqueous eyes and an eruption of the face or hair which tends to appear within five days of the infection.
Where in the stadium, the infected person was seated, where they live and how they arrived at the concert is not clear. Due to a New Jersey public transport strike that has been resolved since, the Garden State buses and trains did not work when Shakira played, although the Coach USA buses brought passengers from Port Authority to New Jersey for the shows.
While vaccinations protect against measles, the World Health Organization says that there is no specific treatment for the very preventable but very infectious virus. The New York State Health Department has recorded five measles in New York and six cases outside the five arrondissements this year.
The problem is much worse in Texas, where 722 people had been tested positive on Tuesday. According to health officials, two non-vaccinated children without underlying health problems have died of measles since February.
