Warning of SD county emissions on locally harvested crustaceans – San Diego Union -Tribune

Friday, the health officials of the County of San Diego advised residents to avoid locally harvested crustaceans – such as mussels, clams, scallops or oysters – not bought from a harvester or a dealer certified by the state.

In a statement, county officials said that the counties of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara had also issued security notifications, because “dangerous levels of Domo acid, which can cause poisoning with amnesiac crustaceans, have been detected in molds collected locally.”

According to the county, warnings do not apply to crustaceans sold in stores from approved sources, including local markets or restaurants, “because state law authorizes only commercial crustaceans or state trade concessionaires to sell to restaurants and markets.”

Certified crops and dealers are subject to frequent compulsory state tests that monitor toxins, said the county.

According to the county. Light cases can involve abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, headache and vomiting. Symptoms are resolved within several days, according to the county.

However, those who suffer from a serious case may have trouble breathing. They can also undergo “confusion, disorientation, cardiovascular instability, convulsions, excessive bronchial secretions, permanent loss of short -term memory, coma or death,” said county officials.

According to the county, the State Department of Public Health “will continue the local sampling to determine when the crustaceans collected by the sport are sure to eat.” Marine mammals can also be sensitive to Domo acid, said county officials, adding that the public “is recalled to maintain a distance of safe (at least 50 yards) from any wounded or marine mammal.”

Although sea lions cannot directly pass the Domo acid, “these are large animals and protected species that must have space,” added the county. Those who meet sick marine animals can call SeaWorld Rescue at 800-541-7325, and report dead marine mammals or marine turtles by calling the national ocean and atmospheric administration 858-546-7162.
