Wanda Sykes Closed the evening typically bombed and hilariously during the celebration of the Critics Choice Association of Cinema and LGBTQ television + Friday evening in Los Angeles, delivering an impromptu speech which passed the range of community organization to admission that it did not see the Amazon Prime “Etoile” program.
Sykes received the last trophy from the evening, to obtain career achievements, enveloping a show that has seen other LGBTQ identification stars recognized for their work in the past year, notably Nathan Lee Graham of “Mid-Century Modern” and the cast of “Someone somewhere. “”
While Sykes began her speech, she kept one of the cards that was on each table of the event, listing the winners of the evening. She joked by saying that she should have stopped drinking when Liv Hewson – who received a rising star statuette for their work on the “Yellowjackets” towards the middle of the evening – came on stage.
Admitting that she had not written a prepared speech – “I did not know that it would be so serious,” she joked – Sykes then brought down the list of winners and mention each work, including her “other” Costar Gideon Glick, who was recognized for her support work on “Star” (Glick’s Win was a birthday; “Star” was canceled after a season).
“I did not watch the show,” admitted Sykes joking on stage after talking about how much she loved Glick’s speech earlier, in which he recalled her mother’s acceptance when he came out at 12 years and some of the difficulties he faced later as an actor LGBTQ + who works.
Sykes – which was recognized for his work in Standup and as a cinema and television director – also called Megan Stalter of the CCA of CCA of CCA “Hacks“And member of the distribution” Saturday Night Live ” Bowen YangBoth who thanked for having been shameless and hilarious, themselves.
About Sasheer Zamata – which won a Breakthrough Performance prize for her work on “Agatha all along” and mentioned during her speech that she came out last year – Sykes joked by saying that she knew that former member of the “SNL” distribution was queer before Zamata.
Towards the end of his speech, Sykes addressed the winners of the TV award of the evening, season 17 Drag Queens of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, calling the program a “Pask food”.
“You were all there to make us noise before all this,” said Sykes, making a gesture to the event, before adding: “The Drag Queens have always been Leaders, fighters. “”
Finally, Sykes shouted Niecy Nash-BettsWho had received the Groundbreaker Award just before her, joking that “the LGBTQ + community is such a fire, that we had a new member, we had Niecy!” She also thanked Nash-Betts’ wife, Jessica Betts, “for doing your job”. (Nash-Betts and Betts I got married in 2020.)
To conclude his speech, Sykes addressed the LGBTQ + community as a whole, but also said that the protection of the trans segment of the community is “our fight”, because “they are kick right away.”
“We just have to love hard. So that means you have to be proud, you have to be strong, we have to protect our trans brothers and sisters,” she said. “This is our next movement.”
