Bentonville, Ark. (KNWA / KFTA) – Shortly after Walmart announced that prices are increasing on several items sold by the channel, President Trump has castigated the company on social networks, accusing it of blaming its tariff agenda.
“Walmart should stop trying to blame prices as a reason for increasing prices throughout the channel,” Trump wrote in a social article on Truth on Saturday. “Between Walmart and China, they should, as they say,” eat the prices “, and do not charge for appreciated customers. I will watch, and your customers too !!!”
Trump’s position came after Walmart announced in its profits in the first quarter that the prices of everything, from bananas to car seats would increase in part because of the president’s rates.
The retail giant responded to Trump’s comments in a statement to NBC News and CBS News.
“We have always worked to maintain our prices as low as possible and we will not stop,” said the company. “We will maintain the prices as low as possible as long as possible giving the reality of small retail margins.”
The secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, said in the interviews of news on Sunday that he spoke with the CEO of Walmart, Doug McMillon, a day earlier, and the company would have absorbed some of the prices.
“Walmart will absorb certain prices, some may be transmitted to consumers,” said Bessent, according to the Associated Press.
Walmart told Knwa de Nexstar on Sunday that it was not commenting on Bessent’s remarks.
The retailer is not the only company to announce price increases.
Microsoft said earlier this month that it planned to increase the recommended retail prices of Xbox video game consoles and certain controllers. The company did not provide an exact reason for the increase in prices, although the Xbox consoles are known to be manufactured in China, which was the target of massive prices of the Trump administration.
Barbie Maker Mattel, Ford and TEMU and Shein electronic commerce have also recently announced possible price increases in prices.
