Until Saturday, the two leaders had not met since before the inauguration of Trump in January, Trump appearing deliberately – and on several occasions – Snob the European chief in favor of national leaders such as the first first Giorgia Meloni.
The need for a diplomatic meeting is particularly acute for the European Union, which faces prices of 20% on all its exports to the United States, plus 25% of tasks on cars, steel and aluminum, if it is unable to conclude a new trade agreement with Trump by summer.
The EU itself threatened to impose reprisal rates in the United States, but has kept fruit since Trump granted trade partners a 90-day suspended day earlier this month. The United States has always maintained 10% tariffs on all European goods, EU leaders hoping to bring the level to zero on both sides.
The agreement to meet comes a little more than a week after Meloni visited Washington in the hope of obtaining a meeting between Trump and the EU chief.
The Trump administration has not yet confirmed that a meeting had been organized.
