British ministers consider the summit of two days of next week as an opportunity to present the commitment of the Labor government to its zero climatic objective objective, and its conviction that the screening of fossil fuels and investment in renewable energies such as wind and solar energy can forge a path to energy security.
Von der Leyen is the highest senior to date confirmed to participate
The event, organized by the British energy secretary Ed Miliband and the executive director of IEA, Fatih Birol, will be frequented by energy ministers from the member countries of the IAI. This includes the United States, which has taken an extremely different path on energy policy under Donald Trump, withdraw from the Paris climate agreement and seek to take advantage of its vast resources of fossil fuels to guarantee the commercial concessions of the European Union.
The American withdrawal of world climate efforts has also focused on British and EU cooperation around the energy transition.
Von der Leyen’s visit also intervenes while the United Kingdom and the EU explore closer links in the electricity trade, the current post-Brexit provisions which expired in June 2026.
Energy companies on both sides of the chain say that the current system is poor and that Brussels and London accept narrower integration resembling the single market. Clean energy companies are also looking for the alignment between the United Kingdom and trading regimes for EU carbon emissions and carbon border taxes.
