Before becoming famous as world chess champion five times and one of the greatest minds in the history of the game, Viswanathan Anand was a young boy with a big dream. Anand recently recalled how he won RS 8 as a money price during a chess event and how he spent it right away.
Of a chess price of 8 rupees to five world championship titles
In an interview Bombay’s tripAnand made a nostalgic trip at the start of playing chess, offering an overview of the modest beginnings of her legendary career. Anand remembered the moment he had won a local tournament in his chess club and the price that accompanied him.
“I remember that once in my chess club, they had a small tournament and the first prize was eight rupees. So I thought I could treat myself. I (I won and) I took these eight rupees. There is a hotel just behind the chess club, so I went there, I had a full dosa and sambar and I had a glass of juice.
“At the time – and I don’t think anyone who is now remembering such personalities – you could have a full meal in Bombay for five rupees. The prices were comparable,” he added with a smile on his face.
Anand was the first Indian to obtain the title of Grandmaster in 1988. He dominated the world failure scene for decades, becoming world champion in several formats between 2000 and 2012. He was the undisputed world champion from 2007 to 2013 and beat legends like Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalo and Boris Gelfand in the title.
Anand is currently Vice-President of Fide. He made the headlines after withdrawing from the Weissenhaus leg of freestyle chess earlier this year. His decision occurred in the midst of tensions between fided and freestyle failures on the use of the term “world champion”. Anand also participated in the controversy in jeans caused by Magnus Carlsen during the World Championships Rapid and Blitz last December.
Recently, Anand attended the Grandmaster’s wedding celebrations Vidit Gujrathi, who made the knot with Nidhi Kataria. Anand was joined by other elites of the chess community, including the current world champion of Gukesh. A video from Anand and Gukesh shakes their legs at marriage has become viral on social networks.
