Viswanathan Anand has chosen the American grandmaster Bobby Fischer as the greatest chess player of all time while he has snubbed the current world n ° 1 Magnus Carlsen and the great Russians like Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov. The five -time Anand world champion was forced to choose the best chess player while participating in the trendy game “choose your favorite” for Fide’s social media handle.
Anand has received several options – all legendary chess players – to choose. The list included the great Cuban José Raúl Capablanca, the French legend Alexander Alekhine, Russia Boris Spassky, as well as Kramnik, Kasparov and Carlsen. However, the Indian chess icon chose Fischer on each of them.
In fact, he even chose Fischer on himself. When asked to choose between the legend of American failures and himself, Anand said: “Well, at the moment, I must say Fischer.”
However, what attracted everyone’s attention was the speed at which Anand chose Fischer when he was twinned against Carlsen. For all the other names, he took a moment to decide, but he has shown no hesitation with Carlsen.

Could it be because Carlsen had labeled the vice-president of Fide, Anand “not ready”, after the 34-year-old chess star was disqualified from the Fide World Rapid and Blitz championships in December 2024?
Carlsen was disqualified for having worn jeans and raped the dress code. However, he returned to share the title of Blitz with Ian Nepomniachtchi from Russia in a controversial style but not before searching for Anand.
While complaining about how the referee failed to do his job, the Norwegian had criticized the role of Anand and his lack of decision -making in the controversy.
“So I’m not even sure I have breaks down the rules. But in any case, they decided to seize this opportunity to continue a very close interpretation of a rule. Apparently, there was no room for discussions or anything,” he said while reflecting on how Fid was treated and has not shown no flexibility.
“Anand said very clearly that he did not know he had the opportunity to do anything, you know, you go with the honestly draconian decision of the referees not to twin. And that means that he was, for all his good qualities, he was not ready for this work. This is what I feel.”
It should be noted that Carlsen beat Anand twice in the world chess championship matches. First of all, in 2013, when he won his first world title, then again in 2014 to defend him successfully
