HMPV, a known virus, typically causes cold-like symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, runny nose, and sore throat.
The new rise in cases, particularly among children under 14 in northern China, prompts authorities to exercise caution ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, a time when travel and gatherings often lead to disease peaks.
Data from China’s national news agency Xinhua shows HMPV cases have increased steadily since mid-December, with a significant increase in outpatient and emergency room visits. Officials predict further increases as holiday travel ramps up.
At a press conference on Friday (December 27), Kan Biao, director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that while the increase is notable, it is consistent with seasonal virus trends. respiratory infections such as influenza and RSV.

Experts emphasize that HMPV differs from COVID-19 in key ways. Unlike COVID-19, HMPV is not a new virus and there is widespread immunity at the population level.
While Chinese authorities have assured the public that the health system is not overwhelmed, they are establishing a new surveillance system for pneumonia of unknown origin, aimed at strengthening early detection efforts.
