A Virginia company’s job posting inviting only whites and people born in the United States to apply for a position hasn’t just raised eyebrows online — it’s also caught the attention of the U.S. government.

Last year, Arthur Grand Technologies’ job posting limited eligible applicants to “only U.S.-born citizens (white)” and those living within a 60-mile radius of Dallas, Texas, a noted the U.S. Department of Justice, which determined that the Ashburn, Va.-based company’s discriminatory listing violated the Immigration and Nationality Act.

A recruiter working for a subsidiary of Arthur Grand in India has posted the advertisement on job site Indeed in March and April 2023 for a position of Business Analyst within the Insurance Sales and Claims team of the company. The ad was widely distributed on social media and generated numerous reports.

“It is shameful that in the 21st century we continue to see employers use “whites only” and “US-born only” job postings to exclude otherwise eligible candidates of color,” Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general for civil rights at the department. division, said in a statement. “I share the public outrage over Arthur Grand’s appalling and discriminatory ban on job applicants based on their citizenship status, national origin, color and race.”

Arthur Grand did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The company previously denied endorsing the ad and said it was posted by a disgruntled worker seeking to embarrass the company, according to an agreement with the Justice Department.

The company will pay a civil penalty of $7,500 under the agreement to resolve the matter. He also agreed to pay $31,000 to compensate those who filed complaints with the Department of Labor.
