Virgil van Dijk laughs as Martin Brundle interrupts interview with journalist who was removed from network over Max Verstappen chat

Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle had an awkward exchange with another TV journalist as he attempted to interview Virgil van Dijk.

Brundle’s grid interviews are the mainstay of pre-race coverage in Formula 1 when he speaks to racing stars and celebrities.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk traveled to Monaco for his last Grand Prix, alongside his compatriot Kylian Mbappe.

But when Brundle tried to speak to the Dutch defender, he appeared to face competition from a Viaplay journalist of his time.

He initially patted Van Dijk on the back before the Liverpool man politely said he would speak to someone else before him.

In the meantime, he spoke with American actress Alexandra Daddario before realizing that an interview opportunity had arisen.

However, he saw a Viaplay reporter already talking to him and said, “Sorry, I’m in the queue like at the cheese counter.”

Van Dijk couldn’t help but laugh before Brundle added: “How are you? We could do it together.”

“Are you English, do you speak English?” » he then asked his fellow reporter who then appeared to move away slightly as Brundle took over.

The Viaplay journalist appears to be the same one who was walked away from a conversation with Max Verstappen during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last weekend.

An official grabbed him and took him away before Sky Sports’ Rachel Brookes could speak to the world champion.

Brundle finally asked Van Dijk his first question, asking if it was his first time on the grid and the centre-back replied: “Yes, it’s a very good experience.

“Obviously it was always going to be a special experience coming here because of this whole event, but I’m very happy to be here.”

“Yes, it’s (electric),” he added. “Obviously the weather helps a lot. All around… I don’t know how they cope with all this attention.

“What is this, not even an hour before the race? It’s crazy but huge respect, so let’s see what kind of spectacle the race will bring.”

Brundle then appeared to say “Sorry about that” to the Viaplay reporter, who was standing off-screen.

The Monaco Grand Prix got off to a dramatic start when Sergio Perez crashed on the first lap in a horrific smash, but was fortunately able to escape.
