Vincent Kompany’s side were hoping to hang on and took the lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen in north London.

But that lead lasted just seven minutes as Pedro Porro leveled the match, before Micky van de Ven put Spurs ahead after 82 minutes.

Having lost just twice in their previous nine matches, Burnley supporters were hoping their side could make a late move to ensure their Premier League survival.

But a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham sealed their fate, while keeping Spurs’ hopes of winning Champions League football alive.

After 37 matches, Burnley have won just five, drawing nine and losing 23.

They have also only scored 40 times so far this season, conceding 76, which is the third worst goals conceded total in the division.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, Kompany said: “I don’t want to see any sulking or anything like that. Keep going.

“Next season starts tomorrow and I know next season can be very exciting, but we have to build that energy from day one.

“I don’t think we have time to go on vacation, let’s come back and pick it up then.”

“We build energy from day one – it starts tomorrow. We have a week where we can now be together and keep the standard high to start on a positive note to get back in that position as soon as possible, in the Premier League.

Former Burnley striker Chris Iwelumo was a co-commentator on talkSPORT 2 and said: “It’s devastating. If you think about the work he did early on, there is a plan.

“The goal is to stay awake and do whatever it takes.

“They got off to a very, very slow start, improved and haven’t had a bad run lately – I think it’s two defeats out of nine – but it’s nowhere near good enough.

“They have conceded too many goals, the points lost thanks to winning positions have been far, far too many and it is about managing the matches.

“When you score a goal, you put it in the back of the net – you don’t need to score again, just make sure you don’t concede.

“You don’t have to play the prettiest football, you just have to do what it takes to get the result.”

Burnley join Sheffield United who have already been relegated in the EFL, while Luton could follow as 17th-placed Nottingham Forest prepare to face Chelsea.

A single point in either of Forest’s final two games would be enough to sink the Hatters.
