Augusta, Ga. – Vijay Singh, the champion of the 2000 masters, withdrew from the field for the tournament of this week with an undisclosed injury.
Augusta National Golf Club said Singh informed his competition committee of his injury on Monday. There are 95 players on the field for the 89th Masters, the first major championship of the season.
Singh, 62, was to make his 32nd start in the Masters. Last year, Singh cut the 61 years old and equaled 58th at 14.
The World Golf Hall of Famer won the Masters 2000 by three strokes on Ernie Els and finished in the top eight out of six of his seven departures at Augusta National between 2000 and 2006.
Singh regularly participates in the PGA Tour Champions Tour. He finished 18th during the invitation of the James Hardie Football Football Temple this last weekend at the old Broken Sound course in Boca Raton, Florida. He finished 12 shots behind the winner ángel Cabrera, the 2009 masters champion.
