New video shows a California man being dragged to safety by an off-duty cop and a local surfer moments after a shark attack left him with a broken femur and ‘bleeding profusely’ with injuries to his stomach and to the arm.

The attack happened at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday at Lover’s Point Beach in Pacific Grove, Calif., about 85 miles south of San Francisco.

A new video shows fellow beachgoers rushing to help IT specialist and retired teacher Steve Bruemmer, who was bleeding profusely. He was said to have swum about 150 meters from the beach when he was attacked.

Footage shows Bruemmer lying on a surfboard as two swimmers furiously paddle to bring him back to shore.

One of the lifeguards shown in the video, Heath Braddock, who used to teach surfing in the area to children, told KSBW: “We have my biggest board and the gentleman, Paul, helped me roll the victim on his stomach and made him kind of centered and stable. We asked him to hold my food and we brought him in.

Another of the rescuers was Sacramento Police Officer Paul Bandy. Bandy told the station: “He was screaming for help, you could tell by the sound and the emotion in his voice that there was really something wrong and he was slapping the water. ”

He continued, “I didn’t know if it was some kind of thing he was trying to push away from him or just trying to draw attention to himself.”

Bandy was paddling with his wife Aimee Johns, a nurse, for their anniversary. Johns told KSBW that when they brought the victim ashore, they cut off his wetsuit and applied tourniquets to his limbs and abdomen. John said he was “bleeding profusely”.

One of the rescuers, surfer Heath Braddock, said he put the ‘victim face down on the board and kind of centered and stable’ then paddled him alongside the off-duty cop Paul Bandy.

Johns told NBC’s “Today” show that the couple could hear someone shouting, “Help, help, help,” while splashing.

Her husband Paul Bandy added: ‘As soon as we got close to him we could see he had severe lacerations to his arms and legs.

Braddock told the program that when he heard Bruemmer’s screams, he “grabbed a few boards and pulled two out.” As I approached, I saw a sort of pool of blood. It was probably the size of a table or a car.

When they got back to the beach, Johns said, “His leg was almost cut off.” Bandy said: “Seriously injured. Down to the bone.

Surfer Heath Braddock was teaching children on the beach near the scene of the attack. When he heard the victim’s cries for help, he grabbed two surfboards and walked towards the victim.

One of Bruemmer’s friends, Jill Hannley, told KION he was “kelp crawling,” a practice of swimming just above the vast forests of colorful kelp in the Pacific. The victim is a member of a local swimming club who regularly swims at Lover’s Point.

Hannley described her friend as being attacked by a “really big shark”. She said none of Bruemmer’s blood vessels had been “impeded” but her femur was broken.

She said it will be a long recovery, but doctors expect the victim to be fine. His leg will not need to be amputated, Hannley said.

Bruemmer is a retired computer scientist and teacher at Monterey Peninsula College.

A firefighter drone was deployed to try to locate the shark after the attack.

Pacific Grove City Manager Ben Harvey told the Monterey Herald the shark was spotted in the area after the attack.

A witness, Fernando Beltran, who was cycling in an area overlooking the water, told the Herald the attack resembled two swimmers playfully arguing in the water.

During the attack, Beltran said he saw the retired computer scientist being dragged underwater for 10 to 15 seconds.

He said: “I was in shock for a minute, thinking, ‘Oh, that can’t be a shark. I thought it was two guys fighting.
