Video shows moment truck carrying gravel hits I-94 overpass in Detroit
DETROIT (FOX 2) – A tractor-trailer hauling gravel crashed into an I-94 overpass and caused a massive rollover Wednesday afternoon, heading west past Van Dyke to Detroit.
The truck hit the viaduct, located at 6450 Frontenac Avenue. On a witness’s dashcam video, it appears the truck’s rear carrier was tilted upward, causing the collision.
The truck’s trailer was made of aluminum and the deck is made of steel. During the inspection, MDOT found no visible damage to the bridge, according to Diane Cross, MDOT spokeswoman. Traffic is open on and under the bridge.
“Steel will always win this fight,” Cross told FOX 2.
The Frontenac Bridge was rebuilt in 2021.
At the time of the crash, MDOT posted on X that the center and right lanes were blocked while police and other responders worked in the area. The Van Dyke entrance ramp was also closed.
Around 6 p.m., the closed lanes reopened and the scene was cleared, according to MDOT.
The truck carrying the gravel appears to be from a company in Flat Rock. No injuries were reported, according to Michigan State Police.
FOX 2 Detroit has reached out to the trucking company but has not yet received comment.
