Video shows moment of fatal Pasadena crash that killed 3

The Pasadena Police Department released video of a single-vehicle crash that killed three people and injured three.

The crash happened early in the morning around 2:38 a.m. May 11 in the 2300 block of Foothill Boulevard. The vehicle involved was a 2018 Tesla Model 3.

Authorities say the Tesla was traveling west on Foothill Boulevard at more than 100 mph in a 35 mph zone and ran the red light on Sierra Madre Boulevard. Video obtained by KTLA shows the Tesla narrowly missing a northbound vehicle at the intersection.

As the Tesla approached Vista Avenue, it struck the curb and lost control. The vehicle then crashed into a light pole and flew into the air, before colliding with a utility pole and then into a vacant building approximately 130 feet away.

Pasadena police say there were four passengers in the back seat and none of them were wearing seat belts. All victims were ejected from the Tesla.

The driver of the vehicle, Moheb Samuel, 22, died at the scene. Authorities say her 17-year-old sister, identified as Emily, is in critical condition.

Esrom Fessemaye, who was Moheb’s best friend, was also killed. Fessemaye is believed to be in the front passenger seat.

One of the passengers sitting in the back of the vehicle, Stefan Pfeifer, 20, was pronounced dead. Her mother tells KTLA 5’s Sara Welch the accident happened five blocks from their home.

The other two victims, Emerson Newquist, 20, and Bella Ramirez, 18, who is Emily’s friend, were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Relatives tell KTLA 5’s Chris Wolfe that Moheb and Fessemaye worked at a nearby gas station. Family and friends say Moheb attended culinary school. The Samuels siblings’ mother also works as a clerk at a gas station in the area.

Fessemaye also had a part-time job installing solar panels.

Some of the victims currently attend or previously attended Maranatha High School, a Christian college preparatory school.

The county medical examiner’s office will conduct a toxicology test to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

A witness who was near the accident described the horrific scene.

“It was kind of like a science fiction movie, when I got to the street I saw the bodies lying around,” Bill Otto said. “They were asking for help, I didn’t know who to help first, everyone was in a bad state.”

The violent impact left several pieces of debris in the area and several homes lost power due to the accident.

“We heard a loud bang,” witness Robert Phillips said. “And then the power kind of flickered and then went off.”

Several neighbors also heard the commotion early Saturday morning.

Geraldine Keams lives around the corner from the accident scene. She said her husband was awakened after 2 a.m. Saturday by loud music from an “electric car” circling the neighborhood.

“He heard the noise like maybe it was kids looking for a place to party, or partying in their car or something,” Kearns told KTLA. “And it was very touching for us to hear especially that these were young people with their whole lives ahead of them… and that such a tragedy happened. »

Area residents say speeding is common near the crash site and hope Pasadena authorities will take safety measures.

A GoFundMe has been created for the families of all the victims and individual fundraisers have been started for Pfiefer and Newquist.
