Video shows Batavia High School staff member placing student in neck hold

BATAVIA, Ill. (CBS) – Disturbing video shows a pupil in the western suburbs of Batavia being placed in a neck hold by a member of school staff.

As CBS 2’s Marybel González reported, the incident happened last Friday in the Batavia High School cafeteria — and now the police are also investigating.

Neither the school district nor the Batavia Police Department are releasing surveillance video of the incident, but CBS 2 has obtained a brief clip – which was recorded by a student.

Both agencies said they are investigating what led up to the fight.

It was a chaotic scene on Friday. The video shows a female student brawling with a grown man – who the school district confirmed was a staff member.

The man, who is holding a walkie-talkie, appears to hold the student against a table, then forcibly wraps his arm around his neck as the student punches him.

There is no sound on the video, but the staff member appears to be trying to call someone on the walkie-talkie.

By showing the video, we are protecting the identity of the student and staff member because the school district and Batavia police are investigating the matter – and it is unclear what led to it.

Holly Deitchman, communications manager for Batavia 101 Public School District, released the following statement:

“At the Batavia High School cafeteria on Friday, school staff responded to an incident of assault and battery involving students. The district is aware of a video circulating on social media depicting a selected part of the incident We work closely with all parties involved.

“The District cannot publicly release any additional information, including the full video, to maintain confidentiality. At this time, our priorities are to support those affected, complete the investigation of the incident, and determine the appropriate responses based on the results of the investigation.”

The district would not comment on the staff member’s current title or status.

Batavia police also told us they were reviewing surveillance video and interviewing those involved, as well as witnesses to the incident.

It was unclear Tuesday night if anyone was injured in the incident.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been laid.
