Puerto Vallarta / Weak shaking (MMI III) / rattling, vibrating / 15-20 s : I’m staying on the 6th floor of a hi-rise in the romantic zone of puerto Vallarta. This building is quite high up on the hill. I was startled by the building shaking back and forth. At first I thought it was my wife moving in bed but then I noticed the closet doors rattling. I went online and google confirmed the quake. The hi-rise that I’m staying in is on the hill directly above the pier. I’m not sure what type of ground these buildings in the area are built on. I don’t normally stay in tall concrete building because I’m afraid of heights so for me this was a bit unnerving. Likely it’s a brand new building with presumably better counter earthquake measures. | 2 users found this interesting.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?
The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,…IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.
