Once ranked world number 17, the 31-year-old faced Japan’s Yuta Shimizu in Arkansas, but appeared distracted on the court.

After losing 6-1 in the first set, Tomic appeared unhappy and complained of illness several times, leading to him receiving medical attention.

Tennis writer Zachary Cohen posted on X, saying: “I haven’t seen him move for a single ball and he literally misses everything.

“He brought the doctors out and told them his girlfriend had tested positive for Covid this morning.”

Shortly before the start of the second set, Tomic got into an argument with his girlfriend Keely Hannah who was watching from the stands.

Fans appeared uncomfortable as they listened to the argument break out, with the ATP Challengers commentator explaining to viewers what was happening.

He said: “Bernard and his girlfriend continue to argue.

“Long story short, Bernie says, ‘You tested positive for COVID today,’ his girlfriend says, ‘No, that was two weeks ago.’

“I didn’t expect to have to comment here on a couple’s quarrel, but here we are.

“Regardless, it’s uncomfortable for all the fans here, who just want to see some tennis tonight, but I don’t know if they’ll make it.”

Tomic then chose to withdraw from the match, before subsequently testing positive for COVID.

Confirming his withdrawal from the match, the commentator then said: “Alright, that’s all. So the withdrawal due to illness is Bernard Tomic.

“Well, that’s a very tricky way to end, and a rather ‘Bernie’ way to end, isn’t it? A tough way to go out.

“Tomic now we’ll see if he’s able to recover. And again, how the hell did he win that match (against Thai-Son Kwiatkowski) a few days ago?”
