Liam Lawson “entered F1 by saying how incredible he was” and discovered what is happening “when the results do not come”.
It is the blunt verdict expressed by the 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve after Red Bull made the decision to deposit Lawson on racing bulls and call Yuki Tsunoda after only two laps of the F1 2025 campaign.
Liam Lawson: F1 is wrong?
Lawson was the choice of Red Bull to replace Sergio Perez after canceling his seat after the 2024 campaign, but after only two working weekends on work – producing zero points and a clean scanning of the first quarter – Lawson was returned to the Junior Racing Bulls team.
The Call of New Zealander marked his first experience of being a full-time F1 pilot, his previous appearances having had two stays with racing bulls, first replacing a Daniel Ricciardo injured in 2023, before seeing the 2024 season when Ricciardo was dismissed after the Singapore Grand Prix.
Last year, the Six Grand Grandes of the Lawson Prize was an audition to win a place in the Red Bull F1 2025 plans, and as part of this, he was not afraid to rush feathers, in particular the double world champion Fernando Alonso and Perez, which he showed the middle finger during the Perez home race in Mexico.
And from Villeneuve’s opinion, Lawson’s attitude set it for this brutal situation.
“You must keep in mind that he entered very arrogant F1,” Villeneuve told Lawson in Nzcasino.
“He entered F1 last year by saying how incredible he would be and he had an attitude. When the results do not come, it makes everyone react even stronger.
“It is actually the worst result of all time in a Red Bull car, so it pays its own price. He settled in a way.
“When you start with Red Bull, you have to be right away, and this is the price to pay to be put in the best team.
“Do you want to take this risk?” GOOD. But then the opposite side is that you will pay a dear price if it does not work.
“It’s like that, and it’s okay. It’s like that.”
That said, Red Bull’s call to unravel Lawson after two Grands Prix surprised Villeneuve.
“I thought they could give him three other races upon their return to Europe, so that they can then make a decision considered,” he concluded.
