For decades, celebrities, influencers and high saws relied on a technique to make them perfect smiles: plating.
Or at least, they did it. The demand for impeccable teeth is always high. Do you have your teeth irreversibly shaved? Not so much.
These days, “veneer without pre-preparation” increase as the new “IT” procedure. The result is similar to traditional veneers, but there is no deposit, drilling or grinding involved to make room for porcelain shells.
All this is part of the trend of “calm glow”. Forget the Botox, people want a microtox. Instead of facial and neck elevators, cosmetic surgeons have requests for biostimulators and skin boosters.
Supporters include Bryan Johnson, famous Longevity Seeker, who talked about his decision to obtain pre-payment veneers to improve the whiteness of his teeth without shaving them.
“Many young people see videos of people sharing their shaved teeth, and they are informed of the high risk” of long -term damage, told Business Insider, Dr. Lilya Horowitz, cosmetics and general dentist and owner of Domino Dental, Business Insider.
Horowitz says that she has seen an increase in people entering her Brooklyn clinic for “low-risk” cosmetic adjustments such as pre-preparation veneer to reorganize broken, chipped, cracked or discolored teeth.
“The more you know about the risk of cutting your teeth, the more you will be motivated to look for more conservative options.”
Pre-preparation veneers are not for everyone. People with larger teeth or more discolored teeth can be better with traditional veneers. In addition, they are no less expensive – often more expensive. However, at this time of subtle “settings”, they emerge as the essential work in aesthetic dentistry.
The traditional and without pre-listing veneers start in the same way: after a good cleaning and a good polishing, your dentist obtains 3D scans of your teeth, dental radiographs and high resolution photos to create a prototype of your veneers.
If you get a non-present, the prototype will be placed on your teeth for an idea of color, size and new shape to make sure you are satisfied with the look.
If you get traditional veneers, the dentist will explore your teeth before placing the prototype to make sure they adapt.
The laboratory then starts the manufacturing process for your personalized porcelain veneers, which takes about two weeks. The choice material for both is porcelain, but a much thinner porcelain is used for veneer without pre-payment.
Once they are produced, the veneers are ready to be placed on your teeth for your final approval.
There is a very specific sterilization protocol before the link process. This removes any plaque and bacteria before the veneers are linked to your teeth with resin cement.
The practice of covering dental imperfections with porcelain facets started in the early 1980s. A decade later, it became common.
“I think we have really started to see them gain in popularity, or at the very least, the general public by becoming more aware, in the late 1990s, when many actors and actresses in Hollywood opt for great white and more obvious placages,” said Ryan Seacrest based in Los Angeles, Dr. Jon Marashi, including customers Ryan Seacrest, Kate Hudson and Benson and Ben Affleck, told Bi.

When the veneers emerged for the first time, the procedure was less invasive, because the choice material – in feldspathetic porcelain – was very thin and could adapt perfectly on most teeth.
Since the early 2000s, stronger materials have emerged that are better to cover imperfections.
These materials, such as zirconia or lithium disilical, are now the norm. They are up to 50% thicker, which makes them less fragile and easier to work with the two veneers (covering the front of the tooth) and the crowns (wrapping around the whole tooth).
This thickness also requires more space. Dentists should only shave, at most, 0.5 mm per tooth, but the thick material can cover imprecision.
Some practitioners “excessively drive a tooth to a small knot” to accelerate the work, said Marashi. “Unfortunately, over the years, there has been a tendency to be excessively drilled, and I think that is why we see the pendulum moving towards the flawless option.”
The teeth are not like hair or skin; They will not happen again, which makes the traditional road of “permanent” veneers.
It was a bitter pill for Rebecca Bacon, a 32 -year -old speech -language pathologist who obtained traditional veneers in 2009, when she was 16 years old. In high school, she was aware of two of her teeth which became smaller than the average. Finally, his parents and dentist agreed with a solution: his teeth were shaved and covered with perfect porcelain shells.
For a while, his new pearly whites were excellent. But the cracks began to show – literally – no matter how carefully she has chew her food. “My veneers are not great,” said Bacon to Bi. “One slipped and shows a tooth ribbon at the top and the other cracked and had to be repaired. They had to last 20 years! I hate that I still cannot bite in apples.”
She wonders if it would be easier to repair if she had the possibility of flexible.
In a way, non-preparations are like retro veneers, using the same feldspathetic porcelain as in the 80s.

The difference? A little more finesse because today’s dentists have made veneers since they started and practice comes to a giant.
If you decide between the two, the first step is to discuss your ultimate goals with your dental professional to clearly understand how you want to improve your smile.
Without the non-preakers, “the original tooth remains entirely intact,” said Marashi. This means that your teeth should be good for the long term. “If you decide to remove the veneers later, a laser can be used to remove the facets and return the tooth to its original state.”
However, your dentist will determine if the veneer without pre-payment are an option for you.
You may want to rethink the No-PREP if your goal is to considerably modify the color of your teeth.
“Patients with discolored front teeth who want a spectacular change in color would not be a good candidate for that, because the veneer without pre-payment are very thin,” said Horowitz. “Traditional veneers are able to hide more imperfections in the teeth.”
In addition, if you have excessively congested or large teeth, you will probably need a little drilling.
The decisive factor is how the lips are far from your teeth. “Usually, if the teeth are behind the damp / dry border of your lower lip, there is room to build. Building the teeth in front of this border is not recommended,” added Horowitz.

NO-PREP does not necessarily mean a reduced price-certain dental practices charge more than $ 3,500 per tooth for non-preparation, which represents more than certain invoices for traditional veneers.
“Reason is the sensitivity of the technique,” said Horowitz. “It takes much more skills to eliminate very little or no dental structure and create a beautiful result instead of forming your teeth and having a lot of room to work.”
Traditional veneers, on the other hand, can be faster because “it does not require as much time to overcome a tooth compared to a preparation of delicate and conservative teeth,” said Marashi.
Keep in mind that, although the veneers are made to last, the duration of their lifespan depends fully on the skills and execution of the dentist who applies them and care for post-treatment patients.
“General studies have shown a survival rate of 95% of porcelain facets over a period of 10 years,” said Horowitz. “If they are well taken care of and well linked to enamel, they can last several decades.”
As long as your veneers are properly linked, there should be no risk of accumulation of plaque or leakage of bacteria under them either.
However, all veneers – like teeth – need TLC. This means brushing, treating dental silk and following regular cleaning as you have always done with your teeth.
