Van Hollen: ‘I have no concerns’ about Biden during debate

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Democrat of Maryland, said Sunday that he is not concerned about how President Joe Biden will perform in his first debate with former President Donald Trump next month.

Van Hollen, a Biden ally, pointed to the president’s State of the Union address in March, during which he vehemently defended his record, a speech that many supporters touted to suggest that the Concerns about his mental acuity were exaggerated. Those concerns will come to the forefront again after Biden and Trump agreed Wednesday to a June 27 debate hosted by CNN and a September 10 debate hosted by ABC News.

“I have no concerns. I mean, there were people who said they were concerned about the State of the Union address. He spoke brilliantly, he delivered a very clear message to the American people,” Van Hollen told “This Week.” co-anchor Martha Raddatz.

“Look, it’s not a question of the age of the candidate. What matters is (the) candidate’s ideas, what he’s going to do for the American people in the future,” he said. added. “Donald Trump talks about revenge, he talks about the past. Joe Biden wants to fight for the American people and propose an agenda for the people.”
