The American has won this event in three of the last six years and a fourth title would match Tiger Woods’ USPGA total of four.
Many other top players will try to get their hands on the giant Wanamaker Trophy, including Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, third at Augusta last month.
McIlroy and Fleetwood will have to defy recent history, however, as the last eight USPGAs have been won by local American players.
Valhalla was designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus and also hosted the United States’ convincing 16.5-11.5 victory over Europe in the 2008 Ryder Cup.

This column hit the jackpot by picking Rory McIlroy at 15/2 to win last week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow and it could pay off to put some of those winning chips back on the Northern Irishman here.
Rory produced a brilliant display on Sunday to win by five strokes at Quail Hollow and it was his second victory in a row after winning the pairs event at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans with fellow Irishman Shane Lowry.
McIlroy thrives on confidence and it really couldn’t be higher as he returns to Valhalla, the scene of his one-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson at the 2014 USPGA.
Looking at his stats from last week, Roy ranked 1st in driving distance, 1st in strokes gained off the tee, 1st in tee to green, 9th around the green, and 8th in putting.
All the elements seem in place for him to end his unfathomable 10-year drought at this level, so take McIlroy for the win at 13/2 with Spreadex.

🏌️♂️ Tommy Fleetwood, a must-have in every way
Tommy Fleetwood can be a frustrating character to follow for those who only bet on winning.
But backers in both directions are getting plenty of returns from the Englishman in major championships.
Fleetwood has four top-five finishes in the last eight majors, including a fifth-place finish in this 2022 event and a third-place finish at last month’s US Masters.
He warmed up for Valhalla with 13th place at Wells Fargo on Sunday, so he looks an interesting round-trip bet at 40/1 (1/5 the odds of the first 7) with Spreadex.

Further into the betting, I like the look of Taylor Pendrith in form at 9/2 with bet365 to make the top 20.
The big-hitting Canadian should love this course and comes to Valhalla in fine form after a win at the Byron Nelson CJ Cup a fortnight ago followed by another top 10 last week.
He’s finished 23rd and 29th in two of his four majors and can move a little higher here to secure a first top-20 finish.
