USMNT’s performance was better than in the national league, but not good enough against a experienced team from Turkey
East Hartford, Conn. – For a while, the vibrations were back with the American national male team. Jack McGlynn scored an amazing at the first minute of the match, leaving those who wore red, white and blue haublings.
The momentum flowed and, even with a list of laundry of great USMNT players who watch this match on television instead of playing, the Mauricio Pocsettino team – despite the pouring rain – exhibited what was missing at the League of Nations in the spring.
Unfortunately for the USMNT, the vibrations did not last. They were not defeated by a lack of energy or effort, or intensity or “desire” but rather of a serious Turkish quality and a gigantic error.
McGlynn’s Fantastic Object He seemed to be a set of tone, but Johnny Cardoso’s gift in the box led directly to the 24th minute equalizer of the Star of Turkey. From there, Turkey invaded, with Kerem Akturkoglu who was kept three minutes later.
And that’s how it ended, with a 2-1 turkey victory, attenuating enthusiasm for the summer of football for the USMNT.
There is not much shame in there. Turkey is a solid team, a team that was a quarter finalist in euros last summer. For the first quarter of the match, this American team – the one that is so lacking in their own high -end quality with Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Antonee Robinson not in the team – was able to play with them.
Apart from a stretch of five to 10 minutes halfway through the first half, the United States looked solid. The Cardoso accident, finally, proved their loss.
“Until we conceded within the first 25 minutes, we played so well,” Pochettino told TNT at halftime. “I think we were better than Turkey. When we conceded, it was a massive impact for us. It was a very emotional objective that we conceded … I am so happy in the whole of our performance and its unlucky that we conceded. ”
Another setback – and these have become too common lately. It was the third defeat of the consecutive team – Panama, Canada and now Turkey – and, although it was better than the previous two, that doesn’t say much. It was the second sequence of defeats of three USMNT games in one year (returning to Copa America last summer). This had not happened for almost 10 years.
The Americans fell 5-4 under Pochettino, who replaced Gregg Berhalter after the early release of the Copa America team in 2024. Pochettino is the first USMNT coach with a sequence of three consecutive defeats in his first 10 games since Manfred Schellscheidt in 1975.
“We have a lot of room for growth,” Tyler Adams told TNT after the match. “If you asked me in March, I would have said that we are far away. After looking at a performance like that, there are many more positive points than we can take. We worked on small details this week and we did not have so much time together, only five days.
“Energy and competition and the way in which guys were able to participate in a game like today, shows that we have the opportunity to do something special. We have to reproduce this match after the match, this cannot be against Turkey. It must be against Switzerland from time to time in the Cup of Gold. Coherence is a large part of what we need.”
With the Gold Cup 2025 – and more importantly, the 2026 World Cup – to come, it may be a positive step. The day, however, it seemed to be another missed opportunity for a team that has trouble seizing such moments.
