USC Senate censures President Carol Folt and provost for taking office

The body that represents USC faculty voted Wednesday to censure university President Carol Folt and Dean Andrew Guzman, citing mishandling of events around the commencement by both leaders.

In the USC Academic Senate vote, 21 members supported censuring the president and dean, seven opposed it and six abstained.

The vote followed a nearly three-hour meeting in which faculty members criticized Folt and Guzman’s decisions, including the choice to cancel valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s speaking time at commencement; the cancellation of the main stage opening ceremony; and administrators’ attitudes toward pro-Palestinian protesters on campus, including the Los Angeles Police Department’s arrest of 93 protesters, most of whom were students.

The resolution passed by faculty noted “widespread dissatisfaction and concern among faculty regarding the administrative actions and decisions” of Folt and Guzman.
