US unveils final aid package of the year to Ukraine

The State Department on Wednesday unveiled the latest military aid package to Ukraine for this year, as lawmakers continue to negotiate a spending deal that would continue U.S. support for kyiv into the new year.

In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States would provide Ukraine with “up to $250 million in weapons and equipment as part of previously ordered withdrawals.” The set includes air defense ammunition, air defense system components, high mobility artillery rocket system ammunition, 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition, anti-armor ammunition and more than 15 million cartridges.

The plan, the latest as U.S. aid to Ukraine dries up, comes as Ukraine’s progress on the battlefield has stalled and winter conditions make it harder to continue fighting against the Russian invading army. It also comes as European leaders become increasingly pessimistic about Ukraine’s ability to repel Russia’s military advances and reclaim lost territory in the country’s eastern provinces.
