One year, 10 months and eight days after the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans will be able to order free home tests from the government. Starting January 19, you can visit COVIDTests.gov and request tests, which will be mailed to your home.

For now, the website only has an English and Spanish landing page. He notes that shipping costs will also be covered.

The Biden administration is buying a billion rapid home tests to give to US residents for free. The hope is to make sure everyone has a test on hand when they need it. The White House has said 500 million of these tests will be available on January 19. Initially, you will be able to order four per residential address.

A telephone line is being set up so that those who do not have access to the site can place an order. The administration says it is working with state and local organizations to help people in at-risk and hard-hit communities get tested.

One important thing to note: Tests usually ship within 7-12 days of ordering. This timeline won’t be incredibly helpful for people who have symptoms of COVID-19 or have close contact with a positive case and don’t have a home test handy.

Still, it’s worth stocking up on these free tests, especially given their demand. Even Twitter accounts known to help people secure new game consoles are providing stock alerts for COVID-19 testing these days.
