A driver crashed into a group of people at a children’s birthday party outside Washington DC on Saturday evening, killing a woman in her 30s and injuring at least 14 others, including eight children.
In a statement released by Bladensburg, Maryland police, they announced that the driver of the crashed vehicle had surrendered and was identified as a 66-year-old man from the surrounding area.
“The hit-and-run collision has been upgraded to a fatality,” they said in an update Sunday.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. where the vehicle had struck several people gathered outside a house for a child’s birthday party. Eleven people were transported to local hospitals, including children aged two to nine.
The driver fled the scene of the incident on foot but eventually surrendered to authorities.
In a statement posted to social media, the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department confirmed that a woman and child were transported in critical condition.
Police confirmed Sunday that one of the women being treated died of her injuries and identified her as Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31.
