US announces $250 million in new military aid for Ukraine

The United States on Tuesday announced a new $250 million military assistance program for Ukraine, including equipment for mine clearance and clearance of obstacles.
Kyiv forces are struggling to make substantial gains in a counter-offensive launched earlier this summer that came up against strong Russian defenses including minefields, trenches and tank obstacles.
The aid “will help Ukraine counter Russia’s ongoing war of aggression on the battlefield and protect its people,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
The package also includes air defense missiles, artillery shells, anti-armour missiles and more than three million rounds of small arms cartridges.
The United States has spearheaded the campaign of international support for Ukraine, quickly forging an international coalition to support Kiev after Russia invaded in February 2022 and coordinating assistance from dozens of countries. .
Washington has pledged to provide tens of billions of dollars in military aid to kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion.
“I am grateful to all the American people, Congress and personally President Joseph Biden…for the new defense package,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Z, formerly known as Twitter.
“Freedom needs to be protected, and that protection is getting stronger,” he added.
