US and UK impose fresh Iran sanctions in wake of Israel attack – POLITICO

The sanctions aim, according to the US Treasury, to disrupt “key aspects of Iran’s malign activities”. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said they would limit Iran’s ability to carry out future attacks.

The sanctions do not target Iran’s lucrative oil industry, but the United States is targeting a steelmaker and an automaker that it says continue to “materially support” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“These sanctions – announced with the United States – show that we unequivocally condemn this behavior, and they will further limit Iran’s ability to destabilize the region,” Sunak said in an accompanying statement.

The announcement came as British Foreign Secretary David Cameron – fresh from a trip to Israel where he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – spoke to his Western counterparts at a G7 meeting in Capri.

Alongside other European countries and US President Joe Biden, Britain urged Israel to show “restraint” in its response to the attack. But speaking after his meeting with Cameron on Wednesday, Netanyahu said Israel would “make its decisions ourselves”.
