The federal government is asking a Manhattan judge to delay the corruption trial against Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife for at least two months because of the wife’s health.
Prosecutors wrote a letter Wednesday to the judge overseeing the case asking that the May 6 start of the trial be delayed until July or August after Nadine Menendez’s lawyers filed documents about her serious medical condition.
Nadine’s condition requires her to undergo surgery within four to six weeks, her lawyers said, adding that she would not be in a “physical or psychological state” if she requested an indefinite delay.
Prosecutors said their office “takes the unexpected medical development seriously” and approved a break of a few months so the Garden State Democrat could care for his wife. But the federal government opposed a prolonged shutdown.
The Menendezes are charged with 18 counts related to an alleged sprawling bribery scheme in which they received gold bars and cash in exchange for favors that the pol doled out to his wealthy friends.
Menendez is also accused of acting as a foreign agent on behalf of the Egyptian government.
